Elephant Butte Lake - 45 miles long - is the largest in New Mexico and the State’s premiere location for fishing, swimming, and boating. Jet skiing, water skiing, and para sailing are very popular. Sail boat regattas and dragboat races occur regularly. Rental of boats, fishing gear, and skiing equipment can be done at one of the lake’s three marinas. Guided tours & house boat rentals are also available. The Inn at the Butte located near the park entrance offers lodging and dining. The lake is well-known by fishing enthusiasts for its trophy size bass fishing. Elephant Butte State Park entrance is accessed off State Rd. 195 (Exit 83 off I-25).
The Dam Site Recreation Area is Elephant Butte Lake’s oldest resort and has been designated a historic district. You can stay the weekend or just visit for the day. The cabins stretch along the lakeside and can be used year round. They are various sizes and can accommodate couples to large families. Many cabins have kitchenettes. The new Bed and Breakfast offers eight rooms - each uniquely decorated with antiques. Enjoy the sunsets and sunrises on the screened in porch. Breakfast is included for B & B guests.
The marina sits across from Elephant Butte and offers boat rental, fishing gear, and bait. Just down the Rio Grande River is Ralph Edwards State Park where canoeing & fishing are popular. Nature trails and picnic areas are abundant, there’s even a playground for the kids!
